Little remains of the medieval fabric today. A fire prompted the flamboyant rebuild in Victorian times, overseen by Gothic Revival architect Samuel Teulon, who introduced the polychromatic brickwork, decorated window heads, tall chimneys, turrets and pinnacles. His vision, endowing Elvetham with lavish entertaining spaces and a rabbit warren of service rooms, would have put it on an equal footing to the likes of Highclere Castle, of Downton Abbey fame.
During the pandemic, new owners Jastar Capital embarked on an overhaul of the public areas, with great care and attention to the building’s period features, which include a wood-carved principal staircase, tiled floors, stained glass windows and feature fireplaces. It’s not a complete timewarp inside, however. There’s a more contemporary feel with an assortment of reupholstered velvet sofas scattered throughout the halls and reception rooms, in block colours such as cobalt blue, ruby red and royal purple. This colour scheme filters through to the formal gardens in beautifully maintained circular flower beds.
